Local SEO works best when the strategy matches your business, your service area, and the type of enquiries you want to attract. That is why I do not look at local SEO as just “ranking higher”. I look at it as making your business easier to find, easier to understand and easier to contact.

The goal is not just more traffic. The goal is more relevant enquiries from people in the areas you actually serve.


Why Local SEO Matters in the West Midlands

The West Midlands is a competitive area for many businesses.

In places like Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Solihull, there are often several businesses trying to appear for the same local searches.

If your website is vague, your service pages are weak, or your Google Business Profile is incomplete, you may be making it harder for Google and customers to understand what you do.

When I look at a local business website, I want to see clear answers to a few simple questions:

What do you offer?
Where do you offer it?
Who do you help?
Why should someone choose you?
How can they contact you?

A lot of local SEO problems come from those questions not being answered clearly enough.


Start With Your Google Business Profile

For many local businesses, I would start by reviewing the Google Business Profile.

This is the profile that can appear in Google Maps and local search results. If it is incomplete, inaccurate or poorly optimised, it can hold back your local visibility.

I would check things like:

  • business name
  • phone number
  • website link
  • opening hours
  • service areas
  • business categories
  • services offered
  • photos
  • updates
  • customer reviews

One thing I often look at is whether the chosen category actually matches the main service the business wants to rank for.

For example, if a business chooses a broad or slightly wrong category, it can weaken the profile. The profile should clearly match the services on the website and the searches customers are making.

I would also make sure the business details are consistent with the website. If the website says one thing and the Google profile says another, that can create confusion.


Make Your Website Clear About Where You Work

Your website should clearly explain where you provide your services.

This sounds simple, but many websites are too vague.

They might say:

We provide professional services across the UK.

That may be true, but if you want to build local relevance, I would also mention the areas you genuinely serve.

For example:

We provide services across the West Midlands, including Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Solihull and surrounding areas.

That kind of wording helps visitors and search engines understand your service area.

I would not force location names into every paragraph. That looks unnatural. But I would make sure your homepage, service pages, contact page and relevant blog posts all give clear location signals.


Improve Your Service Pages

In my opinion, service pages are one of the most important parts of local SEO.

A blog post can bring people in, but the service page is usually where someone decides whether to enquire.

A common mistake I see is businesses having one generic page called Services.

That is usually not enough.

If your services are important, they deserve their own focused pages.

For example, instead of one vague services page, a business might need separate pages for:

But I would never recommend stuffing these phrases everywhere.

The best approach is to use local keywords naturally in places that matter, such as:

  • first paragraph

  • internal links
  • meta descriptions

The page still needs to read well.

If a visitor can tell the content was written only for Google, that is a problem. I want the page to be useful for both Google and the person reading it.


Build Local Trust With Reviews

Reviews matter because people want proof before they contact a business.

If two businesses appear in the same search result, the one with stronger reviews often feels like the safer choice.

When I look at a local SEO setup, I want to see whether the business has a simple process for getting genuine reviews.

That could mean:

  • asking happy customers after completed work
  • making the review link easy to access
  • replying professionally to reviews
  • adding selected reviews to the website
  • avoiding fake or forced reviews

The goal is not just to collect stars. The goal is to build trust.

A good review profile helps potential customers feel more confident before they pick up the phone or fill in a form.


Keep Your Business Details Consistent

Your business details should be consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.

This includes:

  • business name
  • phone number
  • website URL
  • email address
  • service area
  • opening hours
  • business category

I pay attention to this because inconsistent details can make a business look less trustworthy.

This is especially important if a business has changed phone numbers, moved location, rebranded, or has old directory listings still online.

For local SEO, consistency helps create a cleaner online footprint.

It also makes life easier for customers, which matters just as much.


Create Useful Local Content

Local content can help your website become more relevant for the areas you serve.

But I would be careful here.

I do not recommend creating lots of weak pages where the only difference is the town or city name. That can look thin and low quality.

Instead, I would focus on useful local content that has a real purpose.

For example:

This is something I see missed a lot.

If you write a blog post about local SEO, it should link back to your main local SEO service page.

That helps visitors who want more help. It also helps Google understand which page on your website is the main service page.

For example, in a post like this, I would naturally link to my Local SEO Services page.

You could use a sentence like this:

If you want help improving your local visibility, my Local SEO services are designed to help businesses strengthen their website, target better local searches and attract more relevant enquiries from Google.

That internal link gives the reader a clear next step instead of leaving them at the end of the article with nowhere useful to go.


Should West Midlands Businesses Create Separate City Pages?

Sometimes, yes.

A business may benefit from pages targeting specific areas such as:

  • Birmingham
  • Coventry
  • Wolverhampton
  • Walsall
  • Dudley
  • Solihull
  • West Bromwich
  • Sutton Coldfield

But I would only create these pages if they can be genuinely useful.

I would not create ten pages where the wording is basically the same and only the city name changes.

A good city page should include:

  • the specific services offered in that area
  • local search examples
  • nearby areas covered
  • useful FAQs
  • unique wording
  • internal links
  • clear calls to action
  • helpful information for someone in that location

If I could not make the page useful, I would not create it yet.

One strong West Midlands page or blog post is better than ten weak city pages.
